Geoff Vining is retired Professor of Statistics at Virginia Tech, where he served since 1999 -2024 (as Department Head from 1999-2006). He is an Honorary Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), an Academician of the International Academy for Quality, an Honorary Member of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS), and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He is author or co-author of three books (all in multiple editions) and co-editor of two other books. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from Luleå (Sweden) Technical University.

He is a recognized global expert in planning experiments to improve quality, productivity, and reliability and in the emerging discipline of statistical engineering, which addresses complex organizational opportunities and problems efficiently and effectively through proper data analysis. Statistical Engineering uses a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach based on application of the scientific method.

Dr. Vining has extensive consulting experience, most recently with NASA and Rolls-Royce. Over the course of his career, he has worked closely with many diverse organizations such as Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services, Becton-Dickinson, and Pratt and Whitney.

He has received many major awards including the ASQ Shewhart Medal (outstanding technical leadership in the field of modern quality control, especially through the development to its theory, principles, and techniques) and the ENBIS Box Medal (outstanding contributions to the development and the application of statistical methods in European business and industry). He has served as the editor of two of the top journals in the fields of industrial statistics and quality engineering (Journal of Quality Technology and Quality Engineering). He was the founding Chair of the International Statistical Engineering Association (ISEA).
