I have a Ph.D. in Reliability Engineering from the University of Arizona. I am a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt.
Tell us about your professional background.
I have 30 years of working experience in both academia and industry, and all on reliability. This includes 10 years at university as an Assistant Professor and guest lecturer, 18 years in hard disk drive industries progressing from Senior Engineer to Senior Technologist and 2 years in Electrical Vehicle industries as a Senior Staff and Technical Leader of manufacturing reliability.
How have you given back to the reliability profession?
I served in the editing board as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Reliability from 1999 to 2003, and from 2016 till now. I am the secretary and acting president for Society of Reliability Engineers (SRE) Silicon Valley Chapter, the program chairman of ISSAT International Conference on Reliability and Quality in Design, Associate Editor of Advance in Reliability Journal (AiR, an open access journal) since 2014, and a committee member and session moderator of numerous international conferences on reliability including RAMS, ISSAT, Asian IIE, ICQR2MSE, etc. I am a peer reviewer for numerous journals including IEEE Transactions on Devices and Materials Reliability, Journal of Mechanical Engineering, etc. I am also the program manager and host for ASQ Reliability Webinar Mandarin Series since 2010.
What do you enjoy most about reliability?
I enjoy solving problems, conducting in-depth analytical analysis and modeling, and providing lectures to students and peers for the best practice of reliability engineering. I am the recipient of the 2013 A.O. Plait Best Tutorial Award from RAMS.
What do you do for fun and relaxation?
During my spare time, I enjoy hiking and meditation with friends and family.
What is reliability in your own words?
Reliability is quality living over time. Reliability manifests itself during the whole product life cycle from birth to death. The quality of life of modern civilization demands reliability in all aspects. Reliability should be understood, designed, managed, and maintained holistically.
