Abstract:

When cracks are found by inspection, reliability engineers must begin to make repair decisions and contemplate the risk to other components. The gap between discovering and solving the problem is often complicated by the lack of information about the damage mode. Whether fatigue cracks, corrosion cracks, manufacturing flaws or another damage mode, each damage mechanism requires a different solution. Field metallography can bridge this knowledge gap by non-destructively identifying the crack mode plus assess for contributing material issues – bridging the gap between inspection finding it and reliability having the information helpful to making decisions.

Presenter:

Shane Turcott, P.Eng has performed over 2500 failure analyzes and metallurgical projects. He has worked for various companies including Dofasco, Bodycote and Liburdi Turbine Services. In 2009 he founded Steel Image, an engineering company specializing in failure analysis and on-site material evaluations. He is the past Ontario Chair of the American Society of Materials(ASM), has been decorated by McMaster University and once completed a 100 mile running race.
