Risk-Based Design for Safety, Robustness, and Reliability

This course provides a structured, “left-shift” approach to quality and risk management by integrating the Voice of the Customer (VoC) into engineering design processes. Participants will learn how to translate customer needs into clear, measurable requirements using Quality Function Deployment (QFD), ensuring alignment between expectations and system functionality from the earliest design stages.
Through a systematic framework, the course focuses on evaluating systems and their components based on risk criteria tied to safety, robustness, and reliability. Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) is introduced as a primary defense mechanism to identify and prioritize risks early in the design lifecycle. Participants will also learn how to develop actionable risk mitigation plans that strengthen design performance and reduce downstream issues.

Course Structure:
Session 1 (4 Hours): Foundations and Risk Identification
• Requirement management and Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) identification based on VoC (system and system hierarchy elements levels)
• Development of risk-based plans for safety, robustness, and reliability assurance
• Requirement-driven DFMEA methodology
• DFMEA scorecards for consistent risk evaluation and prioritization

Session 2 (4 Hours): Risk Mitigation and Reliability Engineering
• Robustness management and safety risk mitigation strategies
• Design for reliability principles and practices
• Reliability engineering workflow: baseline analysis, goal setting, and goal allocation
• Reliability prediction and demonstration methods
• Reliability sustainment through field monitoring and continuous improvement

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with practical tools and methodologies to proactively design safer, more robust, and more reliable systems while aligning engineering decisions with customer expectations and business objectives.
